Uganda’s prominent political opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi, famously known as Bobi Wine reported that soldiers invaded his home and assaulted his wife, Barbara Kyagulanyi, leaving her hospitalized.
The incident occurred overnight into Saturday in the Magere neighborhood of northern Kampala, amid heightened post-election tensions.
Armed soldiers broke down doors, beat staff, and targeted Barbara, holding her at gunpoint while demanding Wine’s whereabouts.
The burst led to several violation of the victim’s rights. Her phone was seized, before she was compelled to forcefully unlock it.
Barbara was choked, insulted for defying the order. Her blouse was later removed, and her photos were taken. Although not present at the scene, Wine shared the details in a post updated to his X’s handle.
The attack followed Uganda’s just concluded presidential election, where incumbent Yoweri Museveni, 81, who has been in power for decades, emerged victorious with 71.6 percent of votes against Wine’s 24 percent.
Wine, a former musician turned politician, went into hiding after rejecting the results as fraudulent, including claims of ballot stuffing. He also evaded prior home raids.
The military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also doubles as Museveni’s son, has demanded Wine’s surrender, labeling him a rebel while issuing threats.
Barbara, who is recovering from the shocks, remains under medical care.
