Plateau Governor Mutfwang Resigns from PDP Weeks After APC Defection Announcement

Caleb Mutfwang, Plateau State governor, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), about two weeks after the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) announced that he had joined the party.

Mutfwang’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 29, 2025, addressed to the ward chairman of Ampang West Ward, Mangu Local Government Area. The letter was officially received and acknowledged by the ward leadership on December 30, 2025.

The move came 12 days after the APC national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, announced that the Plateau governor had defected to the ruling party. Yilwatda made the announcement on December 18, 2025, during the APC’s 14th National Caucus meeting held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

Addressing party leaders at the meeting, Yilwatda, who is also from Plateau State, described Mutfwang’s defection as a major boost for the APC, particularly in strengthening its hold on the North-Central geopolitical zone.

“With the defection of Governor Mutfwang, the entire North-Central region is now governed by the APC,” Yilwatda said, underscoring the development’s importance for the party’s national influence and electoral prospects.

The sequence of events indicates that Mutfwang joined another political party before formally resigning from the PDP, on whose platform he won the Plateau governorship election in 2023.

In his resignation letter, the governor expressed appreciation to the PDP for giving him the opportunity to serve.

“I sincerely appreciate the PDP for providing me with the political platform to participate in the democratic process. I acknowledge the support of party leaders, members, and supporters at all levels during my time in the party, and I remain grateful for the trust reposed in me,” he said.

Mutfwang explained that his decision was influenced by prevailing political realities and his desire to pursue effective leadership and service delivery on a different platform.

The Plateau governor now joins a growing list of PDP governors who have defected to the APC in recent months, including those of Akwa Ibom, Delta and Enugu states.
