APC national caucus meets at Villa as defecting governors attend first session

The national caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held its meeting on Thursday at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.

The meeting was the first national caucus session presided over by Nentawe Yilwatda, the party’s national chairman.

Several governors who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — including Peter Mbah (Enugu), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Agbu Kefas (Taraba) and Douye Diri (Bayelsa) — attended their first caucus meeting as APC members.

President Bola Tinubu arrived at the venue at about 7:38 pm, accompanied by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, his deputy Benjamin Kalu, Imo governor and chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum Hope Uzodimma, and Yilwatda.

Also present were former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, APC governors, members of the National Working Committee, party elders and principal officers of the national assembly. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) monitored the proceedings.

Addressing the caucus, Yilwatda said recent defections had strengthened the party’s national presence and legislative dominance.

“We now have the majority in the senate and also in the house of representatives,” he said.

He disclosed that the APC has introduced an electronic membership registration system, acquired land in Abuja’s Central Business District for a new national secretariat, and won 14 of the 17 seats contested in recent by-elections.

Yilwatda added that the party is amending its constitution ahead of its next national convention and is preparing for the Federal Capital Territory area council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026, stressing that the APC remains united and fully supportive of President Tinubu’s reforms.
