VAT collection rises 32% to N2.06Trillion

Nigeria’s value-added tax (VAT) collections reached ₦2.06 trillion in the second quarter of 2025, according to the report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Tuesday in Abuja. The figure represents a 32.15 percent increase over the ₦1.56 trillion recorded in Q2 2024. Despite this strong year-on-year growth, the Q2 2025 amount showed a marginal 0.03 percent decline compared with the ₦2.06 trillion collected in the first quarter of 2025.

The breakdown of Q2 2025 VAT receipts shows local VAT payments contributed ₦1.09 trillion, foreign VAT payments added ₦459.95 billion, while import-related VAT contributed ₦508.55 billion.

Analysis across economic sectors reveals notable shifts. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, activity in real estate recorded the highest growth at 155.21 percent, followed by agriculture, forestry, and fishing at 23.64 percent and information & communication at 17.75 percent. Meanwhile, human health and social work activities experienced the steepest decline, shrinking by 68.34 percent, while electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply dropped by 45.20 percent. Water supply, sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities were also contracted by 29.36 percent.

In terms of contribution to the total VAT pool, manufacturing led with 27.19 percent, followed by information and communication at 20.76 percent and mining and quarrying at 15.04 percent. At the bottom were household activities as employers or producers of goods for own use (0.005 percent), extraterritorial organisations (0.02 percent), and water supply/waste-management services (0.03 percent).

The steady VAT performance reflects sustained compliance and ongoing economic activity across multiple sectors, despite sector-specific slowdowns.
