At least 64 people, including 13 children, were killed in an airstrike on a hospital in Sudan’s Darfur region, the World Health Organization said.
The attack on Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur on Friday also left at least 89 people injured and forced the facility to shut down, according to WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Both sides have traded blame over the latest strike, with the RSF accusing the army of carrying out the strike, while the military denied responsibility, saying it targeted a nearby police station.
The war has devastated the country, killing more than 40,000 people based on UN estimates, though aid agencies believe the true toll could be far higher. Health facilities have been repeatedly hit, with the WHO reporting over 2,000 deaths linked to attacks on medical sites since the conflict began.
Ghebreyesus called for an end to the violence, urging all sides to de-escalate. “Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted,” he said.
