Tinubu, Starmer to Hold Bilateral Talks as Nigeria Begins Historic UK State Visit

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer as part of his upcoming state visit to the United Kingdom, according to the official programme released by the British government, in what is expected to be a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening political, economic and security relations between the two countries.

The visit, which will take place from March 17 to March 19, is set to feature a series of ceremonial engagements, high-level diplomatic meetings and interactions with members of the Nigerian diaspora, reflecting the long-standing historical ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom as well as renewed efforts by both nations to deepen cooperation in key strategic areas.

Preparations for the visit are scheduled to begin on March 17 with extensive logistical and security arrangements across key locations associated with the presidential itinerary. According to the programme, British authorities will conduct security sweeps while road closures will be implemented in parts of Windsor and London as officials rehearse the ceremonial procession ahead of President Tinubu’s arrival.

These preparations are designed to ensure the smooth execution of the state visit, which carries both diplomatic significance and ceremonial tradition as part of the United Kingdom’s formal state protocol for visiting heads of state.

President Tinubu is expected to arrive in the United Kingdom on March 18, where he will be formally received by Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, marking the beginning of the ceremonial phase of the visit. A formal welcome ceremony will take place along Datchet Road, where the national anthems of Nigeria and the United Kingdom will be played in honour of the visiting president.

The ceremony will also feature an inspection of a guard of honour, a longstanding tradition during official state visits that symbolises respect and diplomatic recognition between nations.

Following the ceremonial reception, President Tinubu will take part in a carriage procession to Windsor Castle, one of the United Kingdom’s most historic royal residences. At the castle, he will be received by King Charles III and Queen Camilla in an event that underscores the importance attached to the visit by the British monarchy.

The programme outlines a series of formal engagements at Windsor Castle, including a reception for the visiting Nigerian leader and the firing of a traditional 21-gun salute, a ceremonial gesture typically reserved for visiting heads of state. The visit will also include a state luncheon at St George’s Hall, where members of the royal household and senior British officials are expected to host President Tinubu and members of his delegation.

Later in the day, the Nigerian president is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with British officials focusing on a range of strategic issues central to the relationship between both countries. According to the programme, the talks will address areas such as trade, security cooperation, migration management and port development, reflecting shared interests in strengthening economic ties and addressing cross-border challenges.

The discussions are expected to explore opportunities for expanding investment, enhancing security collaboration and improving infrastructure partnerships between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The day’s engagements will conclude with a cultural exchange event showcasing Nigerian artefacts, an initiative aimed at highlighting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and fostering greater cultural understanding between both nations.

The cultural exhibition will be followed by a state banquet at Windsor Castle, where members of the British royal family, senior government officials and invited guests will attend a formal dinner in honour of President Tinubu and his delegation.

State banquets are traditionally among the most prominent events during official visits and serve as opportunities for diplomatic goodwill and cultural exchange.

Activities will continue on March 19 with a private breakfast meeting between President Tinubu and King Charles III alongside Queen Camilla, providing an opportunity for further informal discussions before the president proceeds to London for additional engagements scheduled as part of the visit.

In London, President Tinubu is expected to participate in a solemn ceremony at the Cenotaph in Westminster, where he will lay a wreath in honour of fallen soldiers. The Cenotaph is one of the United Kingdom’s most important national memorials and wreath-laying ceremonies by visiting leaders are a gesture of respect and remembrance.

Following the ceremony, the Nigerian president will travel to 10 Downing Street for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The meeting is expected to include formal talks and a working lunch during which both leaders will discuss matters of mutual interest between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Among the topics expected to be discussed are trade expansion, security cooperation, migration policy and broader diplomatic collaboration, areas that both governments have identified as central to strengthening bilateral relations.

The visit will also feature meetings with members of the Nigerian diaspora living in the United Kingdom, reflecting the important role Nigerians abroad continue to play in strengthening cultural and economic ties between both nations.

Members of the diaspora community are expected to engage with the president during the visit, highlighting their contributions to both Nigerian development and British society.

In addition, the programme indicates that bilateral agreements between Nigeria and the United Kingdom will be signed at Buckingham Palace, marking another key moment of the visit. These agreements are expected to formalise areas of cooperation between the two countries and reinforce ongoing partnerships across multiple sectors.

President Tinubu is scheduled to depart the United Kingdom from RAF Northolt at the end of the visit, bringing the three-day programme to a close. The trip carries particular historical significance as it marks Nigeria’s first full state visit to the United Kingdom in 57 years, underscoring renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
