Kwara killings: Adeleke tightens security in Osun border communities

Ademola Adeleke, Osun State Governor, has ordered heightened security across border communities in the state following the killing of about 170 people in neighbouring Kwara State.

The governor also expressed condolences to the government and people of Kwara State over the attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama LGA, describing the incident as a painful tragedy.

In a statement he made on Friday on his X page, Adeleke said Osun would continue to monitor developments closely and work with security agencies to prevent a spillover of violence into the state.

“I am deeply saddened by the reports of the mass killing of innocent Nigerians in Woro and Nuku communities of Kaiama. On behalf of the Government, and people of Osun State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government, and people of Kwara State over this painful tragedy,” the governor said.

He added that residents of Osun shared in the grief of the affected communities.

“The people of Osun stand in solidarity with Kwara at this difficult time. We mourn with the bereaved families and pray that Almighty God grants them the strength to bear this irreparable loss, while healing those who sustained injuries,” Adeleke said.

The governor disclosed that the state government had intensified security operations around its border areas to forestall any escalation of violence.

According to him, “we have intensified security surveillance and coordination across Osun’s border communities, particularly Ora and adjoining areas, to prevent any spillover of violence and protect lives and property.”

“However, I must stress that the continued sealing of the Amotekun Corps by the police has significantly weakened our security response, especially in rural and border areas where the outfit has proven expertise in containment and intelligence-led operations,” he said.

The governor called on the Inspector General of Police to immediately unseal the Amotekun office and ensure the prosecution of detained officers.

“I therefore call on the Inspector General of Police to immediately unseal the Amotekun office and ensure that all detained Amotekun officers are promptly charged to court, having been held without trial for several months,” Adeleke said.

Warning of the risks posed by delays, Adeleke : “Any further delay poses grave risks to our rural communities and creates gaps that criminals and bandits are already exploiting.”

He reaffirmed Osun State’s commitment to regional collaboration and proactive security measures, stressing that insecurity transcends state boundaries.

“Osun remains committed to regional cooperation, proactive security measures, and the full deployment of lawful structures necessary to secure our people across the grassroots,” the statement concluded.
