Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on Canada Over Potential China Trade Deal, Boasts of Venezuelan Oil Seizures and Greenland Gains

President Donald Trump of the United States has warned that he would slap a 100% tariff on all Canadian imports if the latter bargains a trade agreement with China.

Announced through his Truth Social platform on 24th Saturday, January, 2026, the recent threats added to the President’s escalating pattern of using tariff threats to influence foreign policy.

Trump targeted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, accusing him of turning Canada into a “drop off port” for Chinese goods entering the United States.

“China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” Trump wrote.

“If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the [US].”

The US became successful in using his tariff rhetoric to compel some nations to bend to his demands. He had earlier softened plans for broad tariffs on multiple European countries tied to his long-standing push to acquire Greenland, the semiautonomous Danish territory in the Arctic.

Speaking with the New York Post earlier today, Trump boasted that the US will secure sovereignty over Greenland land hosting American bases. “We’ll have everything we want,” he said. “We have some interesting talks going on.”

The US President also highlighted the country’s control over oil from recently seized Venezuelan tankers. He declared that American refineries, including facilities in Houston and various places would process the cargo.

Since the launching of a month-long campaign to dominate Venezuela’s oil exports, the US military has intercepted seven tankers linked to Venezuela, either under direct sanctions or part of a shadow fleet obscuring shipments from sanctioned nations like Iran, Russia, and Venezuela.

Trump had earlier disclosed that his administration had extracted 50 million barrels, with some already sold on open markets.

The Venezuela focus previously sought to oust President Nicolás Maduro through diplomacy before shifting to force. On 3rd January, forces from the US conducted an overnight raid, capturing Maduro and his wife in Venezuela before flying them to New York for trial on drug-trafficking charges, where they remain detained.

Looking ahead, Trump outlined indefinite US oversight of Venezuela’s oil amid a controversial $100 billion initiative to revive its crumbling industry.
