NPFL Sanctions Remo Stars, Says “Barbaric Conduct Has Consequences”

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed severe sanctions on defending champions Remo Stars, following security lapses and fan violence during their Matchday 20 game against Ikorodu City on 14th January, 2026.

The club was handed a total fine of ₦7 million, plus a ban from hosting home matches at their Ikenne stadium. The measures underscored the league’s commitment to safety and professionalism.

Recall that a brawl between spectators has injured away supporters while damaging the visitors’ bus, resulting from poor security measures during an encounter against Ikorodu City.

Supporters of the home club Remo Stars were also reported to have harassed match officials and threw objects onto the pitch. This led to multiple stoppages, as dangerous weapons littered the stadium.

Meanwhile, in a statement released on 22nd January, 2026, the management of NPFL labeled the fans behavior as barbaric.

The penalties approximated to N7 million, broken down as follows: N2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security; N1 million for throwing objects onto the field of play; N1 million for improper conduct of supporters.

Others included N1 million for misconduct capable of bringing the game into disrepute, and N2 million as compensatory costs for damage to the away team’s bus and injuries to supporters.

Probing further, the sanctions also mandated Remo Stars to play all their remaining 26 home games at Lekan Salami Stadium, with the directive taking immediate effects.

While the club has 48 hours after notification to appeal the decision, the ruling pointed NPFL readiness to combat unwelcome behaviours that have marred the league, seeking to protect its image, officials, and fans.
