Diesel supply disruption behind Abuja network outages — NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says the network challenges currently affecting telecommunications subscribers in Abuja are due to disruptions in diesel supply.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Nnenna Ukoha, spokesperson of the NCC, said the commission is working with major stakeholders and licensees to resolve the problem, which is largely linked to diesel supply disruptions affecting IHS Nigeria Limited.

Ukoha explained that IHS is the colocation service provider responsible for powering base stations belonging to Airtel and MTN in the affected areas.

“The challenges are a result of the activities of the National Oil and Gas Suppliers Association (NOGASA), which disrupted diesel supplies to sites with the attendant telecommunications services outages in Abuja,” she said.

She reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted communication services nationwide.

“The NCC is committed to ensuring seamless communication services for all Nigerians and recognizes the importance of reliable power supply for the provision of optimal telecommunication services.

“The NCC is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders to address the diesel supply issues and explore sustainable solutions.

“The Commission urges all parties to work together to collaboratively resolve these challenges swiftly by removing the diesel supply bottlenecks affecting critical telecommunications infrastructure, arising from NOGASA’s actions.”

Ukoha added that the NCC is taking proactive steps to facilitate dialogue between affected service providers and relevant stakeholders to quickly resolve the diesel supply challenges that have degraded service quality.

She said the commission remains focused on restoring full telecommunication services in Abuja and thanked subscribers for their patience and understanding.
