Osimhen’s Hat-Trick Inspires Super Eagles’ 4-0 Triumph as Brave Cheetahs Fight to the End

The Super Eagles of Nigeria gave fans something to cheer about after defeating the Cheetahs of Benin Republic 4–0 in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying match held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The match was filled with energy, goals, and moments of brilliance from Nigeria’s top striker, Victor Osimhen, who scored an impressive hat-trick before substitute Frank Onyeka added a fourth goal in the closing minutes.

Before the game, Coach Finidi George made four changes to the squad that had earlier beaten Lesotho. Wilfred Ndidi captained the side, while Moses Simon made his 85th international appearance.

The starting lineup included Stanley Nwabali in goal, with defenders Benjamin Fredrick, Zaidu Sanusi, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey providing cover at the back.

In midfield were Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Moses Simon, while Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams led the attack alongside Samuel Chukwueze. The bench featured players like Ekong, Onyeka, Moffi, and Arokodare, ready to make an impact if called upon.

The game started in explosive fashion. Within the first three minutes, Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead after a well-placed pass from Chukwueze found him inside the box. The Cheetahs of Benin Republic tried to respond almost immediately and came close to scoring an equaliser in the 12th minute, but Calvin Bassey was quick to block the attempt.

Possession statistics showed that Nigeria had 58% of the ball compared to Benin’s 42%, with both teams managing one shot on target in the early stages. Despite Benin’s determination, they found it difficult to break through Nigeria’s solid defense and quick passing play.

Nigeria doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Osimhen connected with another precise cross from Chukwueze, slotting the ball past the Benin goalkeeper. The crowd erupted in celebration as the Super Eagles tightened their grip on the game.

The Egyptian referee added five minutes of extra time at the end of the first half, but the Cheetahs failed to make any breakthrough. When the second half began, Benin Republic came out pressing high, showing more urgency and courage in attack. Their captain led a few counterattacks, but Nigeria’s defense stood firm.

Just when Benin appeared to be regaining confidence, Osimhen struck again in the 51st minute, completing his hat-trick with a calm finish that left the opposing goalkeeper helpless. The Super Eagles continued to dominate possession, creating multiple chances. In the 68th minute, Wilfred Ndidi had an opportunity to make it 4–0, but his shot went wide.

Despite the scoreline, the Cheetahs displayed commendable fighting spirit, constantly pressing and trying to catch Nigeria on the counter. Their efforts reflected a team that, although outclassed, refused to surrender easily in their quest for World Cup qualification.

In the final moments of the game, Nigeria’s persistence paid off once more. Substitute Frank Onyeka fired a powerful shot past the Beninoise goalkeeper in the 90th minute to seal a 4–0 victory. The result showcased the depth and attacking power of the Super Eagles squad, as well as their hunger to return to the global stage.

Meanwhile, the Cheetahs of Benin Republic may have lost the match, but they won respect for their tireless effort and determination throughout the qualifiers.

They have shown glimpses of promise and could become stronger contenders in future tournaments. For Nigeria, the win was a reminder of their potential and a motivation to keep pushing ahead as they continue their journey toward the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The 4-0 win was a proud moment for Nigerian fans, but not enough to secure automatic qualification, as South Africa’s 3-0 win over Rwanda meant the Bafana Bafana advanced to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
